The library holds a collection of about 112,000 books and 6,500 academic periodicals in natural science mainly in fisheries and oceanography. A special feature of the library is the Oshima Collection, established in 1953 and named after the late Dr.Hiroshi Oshima, a former professor at Kyushu University. This collection consists of 200 books and 11,500 papers on Echinodermate and is widely used by many researchers in Japan and elsewhere. Specimen Hall has about 5,000 samples of aquatic animals, fishing implements and marine products. The leptocephalus of the Japanese eel, larvar Anguilla japonica, is exhibited and almost all of the species of the marine shrimps found in Japan are in the hall. |
